Career Pathways

What are Career Pathways?

  • We know the world of work is organized by industry, not by college majors. To help students gain a deeper understanding of this, Career and Professional Development is using a destination-oriented approach to career preparation.
  • Based on the 16 career clusters recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor, we have identified 12 career pathways, to guide students to think beyond your major, and discover connections to the workforce.
  • Advising, services, and resources for Virginia Tech students are being organized around these career pathways.
  • Advising, services, and resources are also available for students who do not yet know which career pathway you want to pursue.

12 Career Pathways:

  • Advertising and Marketing
  • Agriculture and Food
  • Architecture and Construction
  • Arts, Design, and Communication
  • Business Management, Administration, and Finance
  • Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, and Information Technology
  • Education and Human Services
  • Government and Public Administration
  • Healthcare and Health Sciences (Health Professions Advising)
  • Hospitality, Tourism, and Events
  • Natural Resources, Sustainability, and Energy
  • Technology, Engineering, and Manufacturing

Additional information about the Career Pathways will be provided on this page in early September 2024.
