
Campus internEXP (Campus Internship Experience) is an on-campus internship program for undergraduate students. Internships through this program are offered during the Fall, Spring and Summer terms.
- Campus internEXP positions are open to undergraduate students of all majors and second semester Freshman through Seniors.
- Internships may be held during the Fall, Spring and/or Summer term. Starting term and duration of experience is determined by hosting department.
- Students enrolled in classes full-time can work 10-15 hours a week. Students enrolled in classes part-time can work up to 20 hours a week.
- Student are only permitted to work in one internship through Campus internEXP per term.
- All positions through Campus internEXP are required to be paid the current minimum wage in the State of Virginia ($12.41 per hour). .
- Internships can be offered in-person, remote or hybrid at any of our Virginia Tech Campuses in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Please check individual postings for more information.

If hired, you will develop professional skills through career-related projects. Your supervisor will be a full-time faculty member or staff member who will also serve as a mentor to you.
What academic levels qualify?
Undergraduate students, second semester Freshman through Seniors, are eligible to apply for an internship through Campus internEXP. Incoming transfer students qualify to apply prior to and begin during their first semester at Virginia Tech.
What are the qualifications to apply for specific internships? Who makes the hiring decision?
Each host office that hires interns will set its own qualifications, and that office will review student applications and make their own hiring decision. The supervisor for the internship will participate in required training on ethical and equitable recruitment, interviewing, and hiring processes prior to reviewing applications.
How do I see the opportunities and apply?
Once you have attended a required information session, you will be eligible to apply to the opportunities on Handshake.
Will this internship appear on my transcript?
Yes. CEP 3084 is a zero-credit course that will show on your transcript as either satisfactory or not satisfactory.

If I am hired as an intern, are there other requirements?
Yes, you will be enrolled in CEP 3084, a zero-credit academic course, and you will set goals, develop career-ready skills, and reflect on your experience. This will be explained in the required information sessions for students. Also, if you are selected, you must attend a required orientation session for student interns before beginning your internship.
When are the required orientation sessions for students who are selected?
Students who are hired will be notified of the dates and times of the required orientation sessions.

Each year at Career and Professional Development’s Student Celebration, one student and one faculty or staff member are named Campus internEXP Intern and Supervisor of the year. Intern of the Year is granted to a Campus internEXP intern who has displayed outstanding drive and talent in their internship while Supervisor of the Year is granted to a Campus internEXP supervisor who displayed outstanding teaching, coaching and mentoring skills over the last year.
