Career Advising FAQs

There are two ways to schedule an appointment with our office. The first is via Handshake. Simply login with your VT PID and password, then book the type of appointment that fits your needs. If you’d rather make an appointment over the phone, call 540-231-6241 to speak with a member of our staff. We do not accept appointment requests via email.

In order to better serve students, we do not offer drop-in advising. Please make appointment requests at least 24 hours in advance.

15 Minutes

These appointments are for undergraduates only; resume reviews and quick questions are best for this length of time.

30 Minutes

Best for most appointments, including initial career exploration and extended resume assistance.

60 Minutes

Career exploration follow-ups, any type of graduate student appointment, and practice interviews.

It is important to show up on-time for any appointment, but that’s especially true when you only have 15 minutes. We ask that you arrive a couple of minutes early to ensure you can start on time. Please bring a copy of your resume, and any questions you want to ask your advisor. These appointments are best for quick resume and cover letter reviews, or very brief advising.

If you can no longer make it to your appointment, please call 540-231-6241 or cancel online using Handshake.

If the university announces a closing due to weather, or other issues, advising appointments are cancelled during the closed hours. You may reschedule in Handshake, or call our office at 540-231-6241 after the university re-opens.

Career and Professional Development provides career advising and resources for all students who are considering graduate or professional school as part of your career preparation.
