Media Studios Student Assistant
Through this application, the Studios Network accepts candidates for entry level positions with the Media Recording Studio and Studios Technology Lending Desk. Applications for Prototyping Studio, Virtual Environments Studio, and Gaming Studio are separate from this pool.
The University Libraries Studios Network consists of spaces intended to teach and advise library patrons interested in the tools and technologies used in creation processes. Student employee positions entail interacting with all patrons of the studio, regardless of race, gender, or status, in a welcoming and friendly manner. Patrons will range from those with no experience with technology to those very familiar with the equipment and software that the Studios provide access to. Student Assistants report to the Studios Network Coordinator and their studio’s Manager. The Coordinator and the Managers have experience in leading teams, managing physical experiential learning spaces, and skills in their studio’s technologies. Student Assistants will receive training and feedback from the Coordinator, Managers, and other staff as available.
Job duties:
- Interact with all users and library patrons in a friendly manner, regardless of skill level
- Learn new technologies and develop new skills
- Advise users with inquiries involving the creation processes fostered by the Studios
- Maintain and troubleshoot equipment
- Communicate with Studios Network Coordinator and Studios Network Assistant regarding scheduling, payroll, policies, workshops, and training needs
- Communicate with Studio Managers and staff regarding technology topics, patron needs, policies, and job duties
- Attend a minimum of two workshops offered by the Studios Network each semester
- Maintain the Studio through daily tasks including:
- interacting with Studio users in person and via email where appropriate
- managing technology inventory and studio usage digitally and person to person
- cleaning and repairing technologies
- maintaining a clean and safe Studio environment
- maintaining an inclusive and welcoming Studio environment
- reporting regular usage data via online forms
Training:
- Training on all equipment will be provided.
Required qualifications:
- Currently enrolled student at Virginia Tech for at least 6 credit hours
- Prior customer service experience
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience teaching others about creation software, technologies, and processes.
- Knowledge of Adobe software, 3D modeling software, and other tools used in the Studios
- Experience working with a wide variety of people in a friendly manner
- Experience working independently without supervision
- Flexible working hours
Starting pay: $13.83/hour. Work study students are eligible to apply.
