Job Title: AI Research & Developer Student Assistant
Job Summary: University Libraries at Virginia Tech is seeking a student for a wage Research & Developer Student Assistant position within the Center for Digital Research & Scholarship (CDRS). This role supports a variety of projects, including IMLS grant-funded initiatives, research publications, and the enhancement of digital services. The position focuses on implementing Large Language Model (LLM) applications, evaluating open-source Generative AI models, and creating educational resources.
Major Duties::
- (20%) Build and deploy software tools using GenAI models to automate tasks such as subject metadata generation and indexing.
- (20%) Evaluate various locally hosted, open-source LLMs and proprietary LLMs to determine their performance and reliability for different projects.
- (20%) Develop instructional educational materials and learning modules regarding Generative AI and LLMs on the VT Canvas and/or GitHub Classroom platform.
- (20%) Improve existing CDRS services and plan and develop new services as needed to support unit goals.
- (20%) Use Virginia Tech’s Advanced Research Computing (ARC) to train, fine-tune, and evaluate AI models through experiments.
Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled student in Computer Science (CS) or Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).
- Strong programming skills with specific experience developing applications that integrate GenAI models or APIs.
- Foundational understanding of machine learning techniques and Natural Language Processing (NLP).
- Experience with web development frameworks such as JavaScript, Flask, and React
- Writes clear documentation and creates easy to understand educational materials.
- Works independently on assigned technical tasks and provide regular updates on project progress.
- Strong collaborative skills to work effectively within a team environment as a productive team player.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in computer science or a related field.
- Proficiency in full-stack development for AI applications.
- Experience with responsive web design, accessibility standards, and inclusive development.
- Familiarity with web analytics and optimization tools.
- Experience performing quantitative analysis of model outputs to support research publications.
