Career and Professional Development (CPD) is seeking a reliable and collaborative PhD student to serve as a Graduate Peer Career Advisor. This position supports the career development of graduate students through individualized advising, educational outreach, and program assistance.
Duties and Responsibilities
Graduate Student Advising & Support
- Conduct career coaching appointments with master’s students to review résumés, CVs, cover letters, and other application materials.
- Provide tailored feedback and resources to support graduate students’ job and internship searches.
Outreach & Education
- Deliver presentations on career development topics to graduate student organizations, academic departments, and campus partners.
- Design and update educational materials, slide decks, and handouts.
- Represent CPD at career fairs, information tables, and graduate‑focused events.
- Support marketing and promotional efforts
- Collaborate with professional staff and undergraduate peer career advisors
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed
Qualifications
Required
- Enrollment in a Virginia Tech PhD program during the period of employment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Interest in career development, student support, or education.
- Experience presenting to groups, teaching, or facilitating workshops.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred
- Experience mentoring or advising peers, especially in academic or professional contexts.
- Experience using university systems such as Canvas, Navigate, Handshake

Hours: Up to 15 hours per week
Schedule: Flexible weekday hours between 8:00 AM–4:00 PM with occasional evening programming
