Why do we ask?

• Reporting your first destination is a Pre-Graduation Task in your Graduation Timeline, specified by the University Registrar.
• The information is valuable to current and future students, as well as academic departments, advisors, and parents/families of prospective students.
• Federal law requires that universities provide certain information to current and prospective students. The First Destination Report is used by the Virginia Tech Office of Analytics and Institutional Effectiveness: Student Consumer Information to meet federal requirements for disclosure and reporting of data on “student outcomes,” specifically employment and graduate and professional school “placement” following the undergraduate degree.

What do we ask?

• First destinations of graduates including employment, continuing education, military service, volunteering, or seeking. Additional data collected:
  • Graduate and professional schools
  • Employers, job titles, and locations
  • Salary data
  • What grads wished they had done differently

• We publish and share student outcomes data, but don’t worry, your responses are confidential!
• What does that mean? It means we only publish aggregate data for majors, colleges, and total university. We DO NOT publish individual names or sets of responses attached to individual names.
• Data collected has nothing to do with fundraising efforts by the university. We are not asking for money, and we do not share your information with anyone.

It takes under five minutes to complete the survey! The survey is administered via Handshake, so you’ll need your VT PID and passphrase to login in.

• It is common that man grads are in the process of seeking employment or admission to continuing education. Tell us where you’re at in the process now. If something changes (getting accepted into graduate school or landing a job, etc.) you can update your response for up to six months after graduation!
• Updating is quick and easy, you don’t have to redo the whole survey, just the questions related to your updated situation.

• Undergraduate Students: Survey access is based on your undergraduate degree completion that you specified in your Application for Degree (a.k.a. “Applying for a degree,” and “AFD”) as instructed by the University Registrar.
• If you are graduating in May or Summer of a year, you’ll take the spring survey. December or winter term grads will participate in the fall survey.
• Note: graduate students are not eligible to complete this survey. The Virginia Tech Graduate School conducts exit surveys with students completing master’s and doctoral degrees. You are not eligible to complete the First Destination Survey.
