CEIP Job & Program Details

Below are more details about the types of jobs that are eligible for CEIP, and other program requirements.
Also see student eligibility requirements.

  • The student may work one or multiple terms, as agreed by the student and employer and the student's academic department.
  • Employers may require students to work a specified number of terms to meet the employer's requirements.
  • A student agreement is required for a student to be enrolled in the program.
  • Academic departments may place restrictions on when students can work — because the ultimate goal is for the student to complete degree requirements, and students may need to be taking courses during particular terms when those courses are available.
  • Students who work in fall and/or spring semesters may need to extend their academic program beyond four years, depending on the timing of their work terms and when required courses are offered.
  • See the basic criteria for full-time and part-time work.
  • Enrollment in CEIP must be initiated in advance of the first work term. Retroactive enrollment is considered on a case-by-case basis, considering the circumstances of the employment offer.
  • A Work / School Schedule is set up in advance of the first scheduled work term, and is required for a student to be enrolled in CEIP.
  • Undergraduates should see student eligibility criteria.
  • Students in all undergraduate majors may enroll in the program, if permitted by your academic department.
  • Students must attend a CEIP orientation before the first work term in order to participate in the program.
  • About graduate students:
    • Graduate students who wish to register with the university during co-op work must follow requirements of the Graduate School Cooperative Education Program. (Career and Professional Development is not authorized to enroll graduate students.)
    • Graduate students are welcome to use our services to seek employment.
  • The student's work should be meaningful to the organization and compatible with the student's abilities while also enabling the student to learn and develop.
  • The employer must help the student understand how her/his work fits into the larger organizational picture.
  • If the student will work more than one work term for the employer, there should be increased responsibility and complexity of work assignments over time, commensurate with the student's academic experience, work experience, and maturity.
  • The student is required to develop written learning objectives for each work term. During the first week on the job, the student and employer should discuss the objectives, which should be agreed to by the employer.
  • The purpose is to assist both employer and student to enter into an arrangement with expectations more clearly spelled out and agreed upon, and should assist the student in processing the learning experience.
  • This should in no way replace or interfere with procedures employers have in place for co-ops and interns.
  • Employer's evaluation of you

At the end of each work term your supervisor will be asked by CEIP to complete the CEIP Employer / Supervisor Evaluation of Student (or the employer may use their own form, if applicable).

Your supervisor should discuss the evaluation with you, so you know your employer's opinion of your strengths and areas for improvement.

  • Your evaluation of the experience

At the end of each work term, you will be asked to complete a CEIP Student Self-Evaluation, and submit it to CEIP by a specified deadline. This includes your evaluation of the extent to which each of your learning objectives for the term were accomplished.

  • Career and Professional Development does not require students to be enrolled in CEIP.
  • Employers sometimes require students to be enrolled with their university's co-op or other program. It is to students' advantage to enroll in CEIP if any work terms are in fall and/or spring semesters so that you maintain student standing while working.
  • Enrollment in CEIP is reflected on the student's academic transcript, but students do not receive academic credit hours through CEIP. [Career and Professional Development is not authorized by the university to grant academic credit.]
  • There is a fee associated with enrollment in CEIP during work terms that maintains your student status. The fee is NOT full tuition, and is NOT paid to Career and Professional Development. See complete information about fees.
  • For employers who require, or students who desire to earn, academic credit in connection with a work experience, be aware that this is entirely up to the discretion of the student's academic department. Contact your academic department to discuss its policies in that regard.
  • Students must meet all program requirements listed here and meet student eligibility to be enrolled with the university through the Undergraduate CEIP during work terms.
  • Failure to meet enrollment eligibility, and/or misconduct, can result in removal of the student from CEIP, which removes CEIP from the student's transcript.
  • Arrangements not meeting our program criteria (such as programs requiring academic credit) or involving graduate students are not administered by Career and Professional Development.
  • Career and Professional Development will gladly assist employers to post these positions, but students do not enroll with CEIP while working.
  • As stated above, Career and Professional Development does not administer internships involving academic credit.
