Develop Your Global Perspective Competency

Global perspective competency:

Respect the viewpoints of those from diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, religions and lifestyles to build collaborative relationships and communicate effectively. The ability to appreciate, value, and learn from other cultures and perspectives.

Ways to develop global perspective skills:

  • Attend an event on campus that encourages you to step outside your comfort zone.
  • Engage in conversation with individuals who have different perspectives than your own.
  • Participate in a study abroad or volunteer experience to broaden your horizons.

Reflection questions:

  1. What have you done in the last year to enhance your current knowledge about people or cultures different from your own?
  2. Give me a specific example of how you helped to create an environment where differences are valued, encouraged and supported.
  3. Have you had an experience that changed your perspective and changed your opinion on something? If so, describe this.

Practice interview questions:

  1. Describe a situation in which you have worked with a diverse group of people. What did you learn from that situation?
  2. Tell me about a time that you had to adapt your style in order to work effectively with those who were different from you.
  3. What opportunities have you had working and/or collaborating in diverse, multicultural and inclusive settings.
