What Is Career Champions?
Career Champions is a professional development program for Virginia Tech faculty and staff that recognizes career conversations can happen anywhere across the student experience. Through training, tools, and resources, participants build confidence in supporting students’ career development. Career Champions helps create and sustain a career-everywhere culture across campus.
All participants start with Core Training, a flipped classroom style training that combines asynchronous work and three live sessions to apply the content. After completing the Core, Career Champions are able to continue learning through electives, employer focused content, and bonus offerings.
Who Can Participate?
- All current Virginia Tech employees, full-time, or part-time, on any Virginia Tech campus, may enroll in the Career Champions Core Training course.
- Graduate students hoping to learn tools and strategies for their career conversations with students are also welcome.

Through interactive trainings, participants will
- Learn the components of the career development process.
- Increase knowledge of resources available through Career and Professional Development for undergraduate and graduate students with varying career needs.
- Increase confidence in ability to have career conversations with students.
- Understand the importance of student reflection on career-related experiences.
- Increase awareness of current career trends.
We also strive to
- Provide training for those who are engaged in career conversations with students and want to enhance their knowledge of career resources, including facilitating a common vocabulary around career.
- Create a network of ambassadors (Career Champions) who are having informed career conversations with students and serving as referral agents to Career and Professional Development.
- Strengthen collaboration between Career Champions and Career and Professional Development through continuous learning in an interactive professional development program.
- Actively partner with the university community so that together we support the university motto, Ut Prosim, that I may serve.
This Core Training is the entry point into the Career Champions program. It consists of interactive asynchronous learning, hands-on reflection, and content application in live Zoom sessions.
When is the Core offered?
We offer the Core each spring and summer.
How is this training structured?
You will have 2-3 hours of asynchronous learning and assignments before each live session. We practice applying the content during three, 90-minute live sessions held over Zoom.
What topics are covered?
- The services Career and Professional Development provides to student and faculty/staff.
- Strategies for career conversations: CliftonStrengths and career coaching.
- Strategies and resources for career exploration.
- Helping students be “career ready” – professional competencies for career success.
- Experiential learning and how to help students reflect on experiences.
- Foundation skills related to finding opportunities: resumes, cover letters, interview prep and job/internship strategy.
- Strategies for sharing feedback with students on career related topics (resumes, interview prep, etc.).
- Using career development theory and student development theory to frame career conversations with students.
- Strategies to integrate career development into your work with students.

For those participating in the TLOS/PDN Computer Refresh Program, successful completion of the Career Champions Core Training provides 12 hours of credit.
After completing the Core Training, Career Champions are eligible to participate in a series of electives that go deeper on topics covered in the Core and introduce niche career development topics. Electives are stand alone offerings that focus on applying key concepts through large group and breakout room discussions and activities. All electives are held on Zoom.
Two Kinds of Electives:
90-Minute Electives: Spend 90-minutes unpacking and applying key concepts within the featured topic.
3-Hour Deep Dive Electives: Unpack more nuanced topics in an “expanded” workshop. Many deep dive electives introduce a concept and allow you to practice as a large group before going into breakout rooms for more focused application.
How many electives are offered each year?
- Fall: 2 electives
- Spring: 3 electives
- Summer: 3 electives
All electives are on a 3-year rotation.
What topics do electives cover?
Each year we feature one elective within each of the following categories.
- Career Design: Helping students explore career possibilities, understand their interests and identities, and intentionally plan next steps.
- Work-Based Learning: Connecting academic experiences to internships, research, and other applied opportunities.
- Skills and Competencies: Helping students develop core professional and career readiness skills.
- Articulation: How students communicate their skills, experiences, and strengths to employers or graduate programs.
- Career Launch: Helping students run an effective, tailored job or internship search.
- Career Launch – Tailoring Job Search Conversations: Strategies to customize job or internship search conversations for unique student interests and needs.
- Techniques for Career Conversations: Prepares to effectively facilitate career conversations and deliver career development content.
- Workplace Preparation + Connections: Help students prepare for the workplace and build and leverage relationships to support career development.

Employer Trends (Fall)
A virtual conversation with Career and Professional Development’s Employer Engagement and Recruitment Services team and Professional Development and Experiential Programs team about what they are seeing with employers, students in the workforce, and the recruiting landscape.
Employer Panel (Spring)
A virtual Employer Panel oriented around different timely themes such as
- professionalism in the workplace
- the impact of technology on recruiting and the workplace
- professional communication in the workplace and across generations
- and more

In addition to electives and employer-focused opportunities, we offer several bonus opportunities for our Career Champions to deepen their learning and connect with peers across cohorts.

To encourage learning beyond the Core Training and recognize continued participation in the Career Champions program, we have 3 recognition levels that participants can work towards.
Level 1: Orange Level
Participate in 5 electives and one employer trends or employer panel.
Level 2: Maroon Level
Participate in 7 additional electives and one employer trends or employer panel.
(If you participated in an employer trends for orange level, you will participate in an employer panel for maroon level and vice versa.)
Level 3: Teal Level
Participate in 8 additional electives and one bonus offering.
How will I be recognized?
Participants who have achieved a new recognition level will be formally recognized in late spring or early summer.
You will receive a sticker to add to your Career Champions door tag, a digital badge marking your accomplishment, and an item as a token of our appreciation.
Our first recognition event will be help in 2027.
If I participate in the same elective multiple times, does it count twice?
Recognizing that trends and information changes, some Career Champions choose to take the same elective multiple times. However, it will only count once toward the recognition levels.

For each offering you complete, you receive a digital badge.
You can see your badges through Virginia Tech’s digital badging platform.
