Hiring managers in analytics, IT, and cybersecurity consistently look for four core sections:

1. Contact Information

Full name, email, phone, LinkedIn, GitHub (if relevant).

2. Technical Skills

Grouped by category:

  • Programming: Python, R, SQL, Bash
  • Tools: Tableau, Power BI, Splunk, Wireshark
  • Cloud: AWS, Azure, GCP
  • Cyber: NIST, SIEM tools, threat modeling
  • IT: Networking, virtualization, OS, ticketing systems
3. Experience

This includes:

  • Internships
  • Class projects
  • Personal projects
  • Research
  • IT support roles
  • Cyber labs or competitions
4. Leadership / Involvement

Volunteer work, clubs, hackathons, award

How to Write Bullet Points (PAR Method)

Recruiters repeatedly say:

“Most students describe tasks. We want impact.”

Use the PAR Method:

P — Project / Problem

What challenge or goal were you addressing?

A – Action

What challenge or goal were you addressing?

R – Result

What changed because of your work?

Example (Data Analytics)

Weak: “Analyzed sales data for trends.”

Strong: “Analyzed 50K+ sales records using Python and SQL to identify seasonal demand patterns, informing a 12% improvement in inventory forecasting.”

Example (Cybersecurity)

Weak: “Monitored network traffic.”

Strong: “Monitored network traffic using Splunk and Wireshark, identifying and escalating 3 high‑severity anomalies that reduced response time by 40%.”

Tailoring your Resume

1. Find keywords in Job Description
  • Highlight keywords from the job description and see how many times they occur in your resume, (ex: Python, Data Analysis, Modeling, Machine Learning, SQL, …)
    • TIP: Do this by performing a “command F or ctrl F search” on both your resume and the job description to isolate the words and their frequency
  • If the skill / keyword is only highlighting in your skills section, you need to assess if it belongs on your resume
    • TIP: anything listed in skills will be looked for in the bullets of your experience, recruiters look for when / where it was most recently used and how it was used
2. Map keywords to concrete experience
  • For each high‑priority keyword, identify a specific bullet or project where you used it
  • Rewrite bullets to show how you used the skill and the outcome.
  • Use the PAR method: Problem / Action / Result and include metrics when possible
    • (e.g., reduced query time by 40%, detected 3 incidents).
  • Include both the acronym and full term where relevant
    • (e.g., “AWS (Amazon Web Services)”; “SIEM (Security Information and Event Management)”).
  • Prioritize and move the most relevant, recent examples to the top of the Experience section so the keyword is visible in context.

▪ Refining your experience: Can help to make a lengthy bullet point more concise and impactful
▪ Tailoring: Try pasting a job description and your resume and asking, “what keywords from the job description should I include in my resume?”
▪ Identifying Strengths & Gaps: Try uploading your resume and asking, “what may be missing or unclear on my resume based on _ job description?”
